STAMFORD, CT – Chelsea Piers Connecticut, LLC announced plans to bring a new sports recreation complex to the city of Stamford. Located at the former Clairol headquarters, the new 350,000 sf facility will be the largest comprehensive indoor sports and recreation center in the region. JGRA has been selected to design the project.

Jim Rogers, FAIA, Principal of James G Rogers Architects and founding partner of Butler Rogers Baskett Architects, was also the architect for the Chelsea Piers Sports & Entertainment Complex in Manhattan. The Manhattan waterfront complex is the only sports and entertainment venue of its kind in the Northeast United States.

“Participating in the creation of the original Chelsea Piers on the New York waterfront was the thrill of a professional lifetime,” remarks Rogers. “Its impact has been felt not only by residents of Chelsea and Manhattan, but also the entire metropolitan region. The opportunity to help create a second Chelsea Piers is tremendously exciting for me personally and for our entire staff.” JGRA’s resume of completed recreation centers, such as the SoNo Field House in Norwalk, CT, likewise attests to the experience and understanding the firm will bring to the project.

The new Stamford facility is expected to attract the region’s growing active youth and adult community. The redeveloped site, purchased by Stamford Exit 9 LLC, will also feature a fi lm, television, and video production studio.

Mayor Michael Pavia comments, “The combination of adding a world-class sports, recreation, and entertainment destination to the city while creating new jobs is a distinct positive for our community and helps to diversify the city’s economic base.” David Tewksbury, President of Chelsea Piers Connecticut, further states, “We are looking forward to working with the City of Stamford to create a vibrant sports and recreation center that serves people from all walks of life.”
